Senior Associate – Government Information & Privacy Law
Location: Canberra
Our Government Law practice supports Commonwealth agencies of all types and sizes across diverse sectors. As our practice continues to grow, we are seeking a Senior Associate to join our expanding team of information law specialists. Our team has extensive experience in privacy, secrecy, freedom of information (FOI), data sharing and governance, artificial intelligence (AI), and information access laws.
We are looking for a Government Information and Privacy Lawyer (Senior Associate level) to advise and support Australian Government clients on compliance with privacy and secrecy laws. You will be involved in advising on the collection, use and handling of personal information; conducting Privacy Threshold Assessments (PTAs) and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs); advising on data sharing, governance and AI frameworks; and managing privacy complaints, OAIC investigations and data breach responses.
This role offers exposure to a wide range of complex and high-profile matters. You’ll work closely with senior leaders in the practice and play a key role in mentoring junior team members. You’ll be well supported, with genuine opportunities for career development and progression.
You are an experienced information law practitioner operating at Senior Associate level, ideally with a background in advising government clients. You bring technical excellence, sound judgment and a collaborative mindset.
Key requirements:
Demonstrated experience in information law, privacy or administrative law
Experience conducting PIAs and addressing secrecy provisions (highly regarded)
Excellent drafting, communication and analytical skills
Strong understanding of government processes, priorities and risk management
Strategic thinker with a client-focused, ethical and commercial approach
Eligible for a minimum Baseline Security Clearance
