Litigation Associate/SA (Melb)

Senior Litigation Lawyer | Commercial & Insolvency | Path to Special Counsel

  • Location: Melbourne CBD

  • Work Type: Full Time (Hybrid 1-2 days WFH)

  • Classification: Legal – Litigation & Dispute Resolution

  • Billables: 5.5 – 6 hours per day (Highly Achievable)

The Opportunity

Are you a technically elite Litigation Lawyer who is ready to step out of the "senior technician" shadow and into a true leadership role?

Our client is a high-performing, strategy-driven boutique firm in Melbourne known for its commercial pragmatism and lack of red tape. Following a period of sustained growth, they are seeking a Senior Litigation Lawyer (4-8+ years PAE) who wants more than just a file load—they want a seat at the table and a clear, performance-based pathway to Special Counsel and Partnership.

The Role

This isn't a "hand-holding" environment. You will have autonomy from Day 1, running complex matters across the Magistrates, County, Supreme, and Federal Courts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • High-Stakes Litigation: Leading complex commercial disputes, drafting sophisticated pleadings, and developing winning case strategies.

  • Insolvency Leadership: Acting for liquidators, trustees, and secured creditors in winding-up proceedings, voidable transactions, and public examinations.

  • Team Mentorship: Supervising and settling the work of talented Associates and Junior Lawyers to lift the overall capability of the Melbourne team.

  • Advocacy: Appearing unled in interlocutory and final hearings where appropriate.

  • Practice Growth: Transitioning from "excellent lawyer" to "practice contributor" by managing client relationships and contributing to BD initiatives.

Why Join This Team?

  • Culture of Autonomy: If you are frustrated by micro-management, you’ll thrive here. You own your matters and manage your own clients.

  • Realistic Targets: A refreshing billable target of 5.5–6 hours per day, allowing for quality work and mentorship without the 24/7 grind.

  • Wealth Creation: A highly competitive salary package plus a transparent, performance-based bonus structure.

  • True Career Progression: This firm promotes based on merit and contribution, not tenure. There is a documented pathway to Special Counsel/Principal.

  • Work-Life Balance: Genuine hybrid flexibility (1-2 days WFH) and standard 8:30 am – 5:00 pm hours for the majority of the year.

About You

You are likely currently at a mid-tier or a similarly branded boutique firm and feel ready for a step up in responsibility.

  • Experience: 4-8+ years PAE in Commercial Litigation and Insolvency.

  • Technical Skill: Strong drafting skills and the ability to run Supreme/County Court matters with limited supervision.

  • Leadership: A natural mentor who enjoys developing junior talent and "lifting the room."

  • Mindset: Commercially astute, resilient, and hungry to build a professional profile in the Melbourne market.
