Special Counsel – Health Law

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health Law Special Counsel to join a leading national legal practice with a rapidly growing health and insurance offering. This role suits a senior lawyer who enjoys complex, high-stakes medico-legal work, values collaboration, and wants clear, transparent recognition for performance.
The role
You’ll work closely with a highly regarded health law team advising medical defence organisations, commercial health insurers, private hospitals and major health entities, as well as individual health practitioners. The practice offers exposure to diverse, challenging and often high-profile matters, including:
• Complex, high-quantum civil litigation
• Coronial inquests
• Regulatory complaints and investigations, including AHPRA/OHO and QCAT matters
• Statutory investigations, clinical reviews and Commissions of Inquiry
• Private hospital credentialing and accreditation disputes
• Professional college and training body investigations
Key responsibilities
• End-to-end management of complex health law matters
• Providing timely, strategic and commercially sound advice
• Supporting clients through sensitive and high-pressure processes
• Appearances at mediations, inquests, witness interviews and disciplinary hearings
• Client relationship management
• Marketing, business development and practice growth initiatives
• Mentoring and developing junior lawyers
About you
• 5+ years PAE
• Experience in medical indemnity, health law and/or regulatory work
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to engage effectively with insurers, in-house counsel, health executives and individual practitioners
• A genuine interest in medico-legal issues and claims management
• Leadership capability and a collaborative mindset
